AI Search Optimization
What Is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization, Explained.
The term with a research paper behind it, and a naming collision worth clearing up.
GEO, defined.
GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of optimizing content so that generative AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews cite it and represent it accurately in the answers they generate.
Where SEO earns a ranking on a results page, GEO earns a citation inside the answer itself.
An Acronym With an Academic Pedigree.
GEO is the rare marketing acronym with an academic pedigree. It was introduced in GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, a 2023 paper by Aggarwal, Murahari, and colleagues at Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI, and IIT Delhi, later presented at KDD 2024, which tested how content changes affect visibility inside generative engine responses. The findings gave the discipline its first evidence base: content that includes citations to sources, direct quotations, and concrete statistics earned measurably more visibility in generated answers than content without them. In plain terms, the machines prefer to cite pages that show their work. That finding is baked into how we write client content: specific numbers with named sources, because specificity is what gets lifted into answers.

In marketing, "geo" has meant geographic for decades. So when someone says "GEO strategy," they might mean earning AI citations, or they might mean targeting customers by location. If a vendor uses the term, ask which one they mean. If they don't know there are two, that tells you something too.

The Research Said Show Your Work. Our Charts Agree.
The research said citations, quotes, and statistics win visibility. Our client charts agree: AW Broadband holds 49 brand mentions and 94 link citations across AI engines, at an average position of 8.6, tracked monthly in SE Ranking. The content behind that curve is built exactly the way the research recommends.
The real line isn't a smooth climb.
Citations rose from zero to a peak, then settled. That month-to-month movement is exactly what a tidy upward chart hides, so we track it live in SE Ranking and publish the whole curve, not just the high point.
Questions, Answered.
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO optimizes for a ranked list you can scroll; GEO optimizes for a generated answer you can't. There's no position eleven in an AI answer. The two share technical foundations, but GEO adds a content standard SEO never required: every claim structured so a machine can lift it and attribute it.
Does GEO mean geographic targeting?
In older marketing usage, yes; in current AI search usage, it means Generative Engine Optimization. The acronyms collided. This page covers the generative kind. For geographic work, targeting customers by location, see our Local SEO page.
What did the GEO research actually find?
That generative engines favor content demonstrating verifiability: pages citing sources, quoting authorities, and stating concrete statistics gained significantly more visibility in generated answers than unsupported prose — their targeted optimizations raised it by 22 to 41 percent. It's why vague marketing copy almost never gets cited, and why every number on our site carries a source.
